Howarth of London is a specialist woodwind instrument maker and retailer. Known all over the world as makers of the finest oboes, oboes d’amore and cors anglais, our instruments are made in our dedicated manufacturing workshops in Worthing, West Sussex.
We use high-tech CNC machinery to make precision components for our instruments which are then hand-assembled by highly experienced technicians into our beautiful instruments.

“Étoiles sur fond blanc” is a composition that explores the virtuosic possibilities of the bassoon and the orchestra. Although divided into movements, the composition is conceived as a continuous whole.
The first movement is “pastoral” music that evokes country settings in its first theme and marine settings in its second theme.
The second movement is a free fantasy that generates wide spaces, thus enabling ample dialogues between the soloist and the orchestra.
The third movement is a “berceuse” that stirs up previous musical materials within a dreamy atmosphere, leading to a cadenza.
The fourth movement —the end of the piece— is a fast Gigue with dizzying rhythms that lead to a spirited ending.
The stars on a white background are barely visible. Music also makes us perceive what we believe to be invisible.

Full of memorable tunes and toe-tapping dances, LMP and the electrifying saxophonist Jess Gillam bring the heart and soul of folk-inspired music to life in this concert.
From the Scottish Isles in MacMillan’s punchy Saxophone Concerto to the pastoral English countryside of Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Greensleeves, the programme showcases the rich variety of folk-influenced classical music. As well as spanning the globe, tonight’s music also traverses time, transporting you from Dowland’s olde lute-inspired Flow My Tears to the contemporary pizzicato in Jessie Montgomery’s Strum.
Jess Gillam, known for her charismatic presenting style on BBC Radio 3’s This Classical Life, will guide you through the programme with engaging spoken introductions.
