Ravel, Ibert, Debussy – János Kovács will be conducting works by all three of these great French composers at the helm of the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. The soloist for the evening is Swiss flautist Emmanuel Pahud, an established star of the international music scene. His concerts in Hungary always draw great interest. As a soloist, chamber musician and orchestra member, he ranks among the very top players of his instrument. One of the gems of his repertoire is Jacques Ibert’s Flute Concerto, which he also recorded two decades ago.

In The Just, based on master storyteller Jan Brokken’s book of the same name (in Dutch: De Rechtvaardigen), Cappella Amsterdam presents the unknown, compelling story of Dutch consul Jan Zwartendijk. He risked his life for the freedom of others. At the beginning of World War II, he issued visas to thousands of Jews in Kaunas, Lithuania. With this visa for Curaçao, they could travel to Japan via the Trans-Siberian Express and escape the Holocaust.

In our time, the news is still dominated by refugee crises, most often in regions beyond Europe’s borders. But the devastating war in Ukraine has ignited a new conflict zone right within Europe, forcing countless innocent people to flee their homes and become refugees. This concert is about how one person’s good deeds can save thousands of lives. Jan Brokken himself takes the stage to narrate the story, accompanied by choir and saxophone quartet.

Gerald Finzi’s Clarinet Concerto is one of the 20th century British composer’s most popular orchestral works, a woodwind gem whose pastoral nostalgia and folk-inspired spontaneity will come to life with Singapore Symphony Principal Clarinet Ma Yue. SSO Associate Conductor Rodolfo Barráez continues his survey of Mozart’s symphonic oeuvre with the stately harmonies of the Haffner Symphony and the supreme confidence of his 39th.
