The Hallé in Sheffield
April 23rd 2024 at 19:00 – 20:30
Music Director of the Ulster Orchestra and of Opéra National de Lyon, Daniele Rustioni returns to the Hallé having been named “Best Conductor of the Year” at the 2022 International Opera Awards.
Wagner’s Prelude to Act One of Die Meistersinger climaxes in a compositional tour-de-force as he effortlessly combines five of the opera’s main themes.
The Hallé’s own Principal Oboe, Stéphane Rancourt, takes the virtuosic solo role in Richard Strauss’s Oboe Concerto. Considered by many to be the finest concerto for oboe written in the 20th century, the work is awash with autumnal colours of the great Romantic composer’s so-called Indian summer years.
Liszt’s symphonic poem Les préludes plumbs the mystery of life and what lies beyond it, and Richard Strauss’s suite from Der Rosenkavalier encapsulates the opera with its sparkling waltzes, sumptuous orchestration and ravishing love music.

BBC SO Total Immersion: Italian Radicals
BBC Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Singers
May 5th 2024 at 19:30 – 22:00
Martyn Brabbins, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Singers launch an evening-long odyssey through the music of Dallapiccola, Maderna, Nono and Berio.
‘Keep going!’ Imagine a symphony that takes everything a symphony has been and everything a symphony could be: an orchestral showpiece that’s simultaneously a protest, a celebration, and a postmodern prank from the heart of 1960s counterculture. Berio’s Sinfonia is the climax to a day-long immersion in the music of postwar Italy.
But as we’ve heard, it’s just part of a far bigger – and even more gripping – story. Bristling, brilliant sonic adventures by Dallapiccola, by former BBC Symphony Orchestra guest conductor Bruno Maderna and by the far-left maverick Luigi Nono pave the way to Berio’s modern classic: outsize creative personalities who set out to remake the world, and left a legacy of music that continues to outrage, astonish and enchant.
