Tchaikovsky / Mozart / Beethoven
September 3rd 2023 at 11:00 – 12:30
The title of Peter Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme for Cello and Orchestra, first performed in 1877, is misleading. When you think of rococo, you think of courtly, ornate opulence and powder wigs. But the Russian composer primarily had his great role model Mozart in his ear. The theme of this series of variations does not come from the pen of the Salzburger, but it could have been written by him in its simple expressiveness. Difficult to play, but blessed with an immensely yearning expressiveness, the oboe, like the cello, has always been considered a particularly sensitive instrument. Mozart knew how to use these qualities skilfully – and Guilherme Filipe Costa Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg, transfers the special sound into the present day.
