Juilliard Graduate Places First in 2014 NSAL Music Competition

Congratulations to Oboist, and Howarth Artist, Julia Marie DeRosa, a student of The Juilliard School of Music, who is the First Place winner of the National Society of Arts and Letters 2014 National Woodwinds Competition, where she was awarded $10,000.  The event, held in Charleston, West Virginia, was open to all First Place winners on the chapter level in clarinet, flute, or oboe.  Earlier this year Julia won first place in the NSAL-New York Woodwinds Competition held at SUNY Fredonia.

Julia received her bachelor of music degree from The Juilliard School of Music in 2013 and expects to complete her masters in music from Juilliard in 2015. She is a student of Elaine Douvas (principal oboist, Metropolitan Opera, and chair, Woodwinds Department, The Juilliard School of Music) and is the winner of the Peter Mennin Prize for Outstanding Achievement and Leadership in Music.

The National Society of Arts and Letters, established in 1944, supports young talent in the performing, visual, and literary arts. Margaret Johnson serves as president of the NSAL-New York Chapter. The chapter was chartered by Juanita Wallace Jackson in 2010.
